Serene Transitional Bedroom

This guest bedroom had become a storage catch-all. The biggest issue was an over-sized traditional bedroom suite which made the small room feel even more cramped. The dark wood tones and dated colors also made the space feel heavy. To ensure each of her guests would feel at home, the client wanted to continue to include a television and seating in the room. Light-control was an issue, but she still wanted guests to be able to look out the window at the view. She also wanted a look that was neither feminine nor masculine to welcome a variety of guests.

To open up this guest bedroom we chose a neutral palette with clean lines and luminous finishes. Grasscloth was added to create a textured focal wall. To complete the focal point, the wing back upholstered bed features monochromatic bedding with gender neutral geometric patterns. Swing arm sconces add easily-accessible lighting for guests, set the mood, and also make the best use of the small space. The decorative wall mirrors and the mirror finished tables reflect light throughout the bedroom making it feel larger. The window is framed by decorative custom drapery panels with light-controlling shades underneath. The veined shades softly diffuse light when open and darken the room when fully closed. For seating, two modern wing chairs create a functional vignette in front of the window. The long, slender media console in a muted gray finish provides media storage without the bulk and heaviness. Flanking the console hangs sophisticated floral artwork which adds height and drama to the large wall. The use of large and small scale pattern, textures, and transitional shapes keep the room both interesting and inviting.
