Warm Transitional Family Room

These clients recently moved to Tennessee from Houston, TX, after suffering a devastating flood to their home there. Transitioning to their new home, they had a few pieces that they wanted us to incorporate into the design, including their artwork collected over many years. The open-concept of this home allowed for easy view of the living room, dining room, kitchen and foyer—as well as the most gorgeous view of the lake I have ever seen in my 10 years designing in East TN! Of course, that also provided a “glaring” problem with the reflection off the lake. They did not care for their existing furniture although it was not in bad shape, it was not comfortable or fit the style they were desiring for their new home. The room was long and somewhat narrow. They wanted enough seating so that when they could enjoy guests in their home again (which they love to do), so there would be ample room for all.

The “glaring” problem was addressed with a solution of Hunter Douglas Luminettes that provide sheer, soft, light filtering into the room, but also provide the ability for the vanes to close completely. This allowed for easier television viewing and provided a softness to the room without obstructing the view, as they could easily be drawn out of view. With two sliding doors and an elongated window in between, it created a chance to be creative in our solution. Using Hunter Douglas Woven Woods we covered the elongated window between the two sliding doors, and continued the faux iron design in the transom window above it. Creating different window treatments created interest and left the beautiful view to speak for itself! Once we addressed the windows, we looked to the floor and selected a soft, neutral custom-made area rug to coordinate with the pallet of the open concept and other custom rugs in view. The custom sectional with warm caramel leather is a comfortable place to sit and watch television or just enjoy the lake view. In keeping with the soft pallet, the custom recliner and two swivel chairs that flank the elongated window allows for plenty of seating space for guests. Accessories, including sculptures, custom floral arrangements and other strategically placed items on the bookshelves and fireplace create the client’s personality in the room.
