Located in Blount County, Maryville is a city and the county seat with an estimated population of 27,465. Included in the Knoxville Metropolitan Area, Maryville is situated near tourist destinations such as the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Dollywood, Gatlinburg, and Pigeon Forge. Maryville was a center of abolitionist activity throughout the early 19th-century; it was generated mostly by the Society of Friends, which had a relatively large presence in Blount County.
