Feminine Living Room

This client enjoys entertaining in small groups, but felt the space was not one she was proud of. In addition, she needed a space to relax, watch television or read, but she did not want the television to be the main focus of the room when entertaining. She wanted a space that reflected her Transitional style with a touch of nature. Her two dogs would be sharing the room with her, so she needed the fabrics to be functional and durable. The existing multiple floating shelves on the one large wall caused visual clutter and cut the room’s grandeur in half. She had collected many pieces from her worldly travels, but did not know how to display them. Among her collection was an especially unique sculpture that she asked to remain over the fireplace.

First addressed was the challenge of hiding the television. I created a focal point on the one long wall in the room using a glamorous, multi-use, mirrored cabinet with wrap-around doors as the best design solution. Working with existing neutral walls in adjoining rooms, a soft, neutral, complementary palette was created. Deep violets, soft grays, and rose quartz in the stylized and large floral, transitional wool area rug set the stage for the remainder of the room. Oversized, stunning giclée artwork was used to bring soft rose quartz to complement the neutral pallet, and two additional accent Abalone shells in hand-painted silver frames were added to the adjacent wall. Natural elements are mimicked in the round brass branch based cocktail table with a creamy travertine top that is both beautiful and functional. Delicate oval French key accent tables topped with preserved oval boxwood topiaries sit next to each of the willow branch fabric swivel chairs. A one-cushion sofa in a light colored performance fabric was placed at an angle to create interest, and a contrasting, distressed, dark wood console was placed behind it. Various shaped pillows in Transitional fabrics such as creamy leopard and stria striped wheat surround the sofa. Ambient lighting was created using two ivory, marble accented floor lamps. Task lighting on the round end table is mouth-blown glass with a faux silk shade and double-pulls, and mood lighting is a spherical ivory lamp with hand-painted golden loops and an oval hard-back painted shade. Specifically for the comfort of the client, a power-reclining chair in a soft putty leather allowed her to relax in her newly designed room with push-button ease!
