Project Overview:

This 1960s home last had a kitchen remodel in the early 2000s but it now felt cramped and outdated for this client. As the home where the entire family comes to visit, she needed a kitchen that would be able to seat 20-30 for the holidays and the space to spread out. This lake home has a great view, but the only place in the kitchen she could see it was a small window above the sink. Ideally she wanted to expand the kitchen into the old dining room, now office, and get a long serving island that faced the lake. She also loves plants and wanted to use the large picture window in the office to let them grow. Going through a remodel of any kind can be stressful, but this client went through a number of family deaths, including her spouse, as well as having both of her retinas detach. This brought new changes during the project to compensate and adapt to her needs as well as adapting how to convey the design to her. As such, we have become really close to this client, and count her as one of our very favorite clients to work with. After all of the hardships she endured during the 6 month completion of this kitchen project, she maintained a positive outlook on life and genuine persistence to continue her goals. She is an inspirational person to have helped with her home, and we are happy she loves it.

Bright Modern Kitchen

This kitchen remodel completely reshaped this side of the home. Taking down the wall between the original kitchen and the office, as well as removing a hall closet allowed the previously small kitchen to triple in size. The 24′ x 24′ kitchen features ivory cabinets in a simple shaker style with black handles touched with copper accents. This brings up the new wood flooring selected to match the existing flooring in the nearby dining room and living room. To blend the transition from existing flooring to new, the wood flooring in the kitchen was placed on a diagonal which hides the slight color variation between the two floors. A focused was placed on ample lighting for task, ambiance, and navigation, with directional lighting placed at the toe kick, under the cabinets, and along the ceiling with recessed led can lights. Aesthetic modern island lights and the chandelier over the large breakfast table are in a matte black with crisp white glass. The large island is flanked by an equally large breakfast table that allows for 10-12 easily without impeding the functionality of the kitchen work triangle. Ample storage is provided by the length of the large island as well as two large pantry cabinets. The desire for more of a lake view was provided by opening up the window that was previously above the sink into a second sliding glass door. Stacked baking ovens as well as a new gas range top with statement hood provides the home owner with the ability to cook meals for 20+ easily and quickly. Care was placed to have selections that were easy to clean with high contrast for easy visibility. The quartz countertops have a soft subtle movement that mimics natural Taj Mahal quartzite and acts as the anchor for the color palette of the space. The decision to have the quartz for the backsplash was made for aesthetics as well as easy cleaning and care. The statement cuts of the backsplash behind the range lets the focal point of the kitchen shine and give a decisive end to the height of the quartz without going up the entire height of the wall. Light protection and privacy is provided by the Provenance Woven Wood treatment above the plant window as well as the soft glow provided by the Luminette Sheer Shadings. With both of these treatments in Powerview the home owner has the ability to set these on a timer as well as tell Alexa to open and close the window treatments as needed. All in all this light and bright kitchen updates and modernizes this home with current amenities and a timeless sensibility.
